Saturday, June 25
Hopkinton State Park

Saturday, August 20

Thirteenth annual Against The Tide one-mile swim, two-mile
kayaking and three-mile fitness walk, benefiting the Massachusetts
Breast Cancer Coalition, will be held again at Hopkinton State
Park in June and Nickerson State Park, Brewster in August.
This fun and inspirational program brings together swimmers,
kayakers and walkers of all ages and abilities who would like
to join MBCC in eradicating the breast cancer epidemic.
Participants must raise a minimum of $150 in contributions
to benefit the MBCC. Registration materials available at mbcc.org
include tips for preparing for an open water swim, a safe walking
experience, and a safe kayak experience. Also available is
a sample fundraising letter for soliciting donations and a
list of fundraising ideas to help participants increase their
effectiveness in raising funds on line or by mail.
“Funds raised by the Against the Tide swims, walk and
kayak are crucial to our work to save future generations from
facing the growing statistic of breast cancer diagnoses. We
want to identify ways to prevent breast cancer,” said
Deborah Forter, Executive Director of MBCC. “This year
in Massachusetts alone, approximately 4,700 women will be diagnosed
with breast cancer and more than 900 will die from it. The
fight to eradicate this disease is not over.”
Breast cancer now strikes more women in the world than any
other type of cancer. In the past 50 years, the lifetime risk
of breast cancer has nearly tripled in the United States. In
the 1940’s, a woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer
was 1 in 22. In the year 2002, the risk was 1 in 8 and is now
closely approaching 1 in 7.
“Things have changed over the past 13 years” says
Against the Tide founder Maria Vetrano, who lost her mother
Camille to breast cancer in 1978. “When we founded Against
the Tide in 1993, there were no other events specifically for
breast cancer and those affected. Now, there are many across
the country. We are raising awareness focused on prevention,” she
says. “MBCC is a grassroots organization dedicated to
ending the breast cancer epidemic.”
The Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition is a nonprofit organization
committed to stopping the breast cancer epidemic in Massachusetts
through activism, advocacy, research and education. Founded
in 1991, the MBCC’s focus is on finding the causes of
breast cancer and seeking real prevention of this devastating
disease.

December
2 through 5, 2004: 7th Annual Festival of (Giving) Trees
There’s nothing better than starting the holiday season
off with good cheer, good music and good friends. And… there’s
no better place than at the 7th Annual Festival of (Giving)
Trees.
On December 2nd the Festival of Giving Trees opened with an evening performance
of the Holiday Choral Premier at Notre Dame Church comprised of talented singers
and musicians. This was immediately followed by the Premier Viewing of
a grand display of over seventy-five sparkling holiday decorated trees at Notre
Dame Hall. Public viewing began on December 3rd. Many businesses, groups,
organizations and individuals gave their time and talent by donating and decorating
artificial Christmas trees of various sizes for display and raffle throughout
the week.
Friday, December 3rd, was Senior Citizen Day which offered
free admission to Senior citizens and a special seniors’ luncheon
menu. Friday Evening featured the Gala Viewing Party.
Children’s Day, including the judging of the children’s
trees, a special visit from a special someone and local teachers
reading holiday stories took place on Saturday, December
4th.
Our final day and Tree Raffle drawing was Sunday, December
5th. We also held a drawing for a 2005 Toyota Corolla CE
or 50/50 Raffle. Tickets were available at Tri-State Toyota-Scion-Dodge,
Southbridge Savings Bank, and Big Bunny Market.
Fundraising efforts benefit Silent Spring Institute (dedicated
to studying the environmental causes of cancer), Massachusetts
Breast Cancer Coalition and the Harrington Memorial Hospital
Education and Resource Center (dedicated to assisting local
cancer patients with transportation, medicine, babysitting
and other services).
Thank you for joining us in making this another successful
Holiday Fundraiser. Looking forward to seeing you all again!
December
5, 2004: Beyond Beauty’s Wellness "Beaut-a-thon"
Mashpee, MA – Beyond Beauty’s Wellness "Beaut-a-thon" on
December 5, 2004 raises money for Silent Spring Institute.
On
Sunday, December 5, 2004 from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.,
a Wellness "Beaut-a-thon" was hosted by Beyond
Beauty, an Aveda concept day spa/salon located in the Mashpee
Commons. The spa offered a multitude of services - including
hair, makeup, massage, and nails- for a donation
of $10 per service. All of the proceeds were donated to Silent
Spring Institute.
Joy Pineo, owner of Beyond Beauty, lost her mother to breast
cancer and is a strong supporter of Silent Spring. Since Beyond
Beauty’s opening in 1997, Joy has worked closely with
Cheryl Osimo, Silent Spring Institute’s Cape Cod Coordinator.
Joy chose to be an Aveda Concept day spa/salon not only for
Aveda’s ideals and standards, but also for how passionately
they are represented in all of their products and services. "Aveda’s
art and science of pure flower and plant essences calls for
ingredients of the highest integrity. Sourcing these ingredients
from traditional communities around the world allows Aveda
to connect its mission of environmental and social responsibility," says
Dominique Conseil, president of Aveda. Though Aveda consistently
uses as little of "non-natural" ingredients as possible
in all of their products, Dominique is still not satisfied.
He has a set an extremely challenging goal for himself and
for Aveda – being able to produce products that are "100%
natural".
