Tools for Linking Environmental and Health Research Data
Because GIS technology has its roots in urban planning and
management of utilities and infrastructure, standard GIS tools
are better suited to these applications than they are to health
research. Developing custom tools and new ways of using standard
tools provides health researchers the opportunity to use GIS
more effectively in their work.
Two new GIS tools that represent key GIS technical innovations
in Silent Spring Institute's Cape Cod Breast Cancer and Environment
Study exposure assessment are the Spatial
Proximity Tool and the Public Well Assessment Tool. Although
the Institute developed these tools specifically for the Cape
Study, their potential use extends beyond the study to a variety
of environmental health research applications.
