Excerpt: Researchers at the Silent Spring Institute studied twenty public wells on Cape Cod and found three quarters tested positive for low levels of contaminants, including pharmaceuticals and chemicals found in consumer products.
They believe most came from septic systems, which are widely used on the Cape.
However, they say the levels are extremely low, and are well below federal safety guidelines.
"At this point, the health risks of exposure of low levels of these types of chemicals are really not well understood," said Silent Spring's researcher Laurel Schaider. "We know at higher levels they can have health effects, and it's important to keep in mind the levels we found are well below those levels."
