Though many Cape towns are taking steps to eliminate nitrates from their water, scientists with the Silent Spring Institute suggested yesterday that other substances, from perfumes to pharmaceuticals, need serious attention, too.

“There are 30 chemicals we need to be aware of and concerned about,” said Dr. David Reckhow, UMass Amherst professor and head of the Mass Water Resource Authority.

Reckhow and three fellow water experts addressed around 50 attendees at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth on Wednesday during a discussion hosted by the Silent Spring Institute – a non-profit that studies the link between the environment and human health – and the Cape branch of the Sierra Club.
