One of a broad suite of organic chemicals—identified as mammary carcinogens—that are important for breast cancer research. PAHs are ubiquitous air pollutants from car exhaust, cigarette smoke, and certain industrial emissions, as well as in foods that have been smoked or grilled. The Long Island Breast Cancer Study showed an association between PAH exposure and the risk of breast cancer diagnosis before age 65.
