Statistical significance is based on a number called a “p-value.” The “p” in p-value stands for probability; the p-value represents the probability that observed differences in disease incidence are due to chance. By convention, results achieving a p-value less than 0.05 are called statistically significant, which simply means that the odds that the finding is due only to chance is one in twenty.
