A compound from the organochlorine family used as an insecticide. Dieldrin is highly toxic and persists in the environment for extended periods. Although it is now banned in the United States, it can still be detected in dust, soil, air, fish, meat, and breast milk. Evidence from laboratory and wildlife research shows dieldrin to be estrogenic.
